Short Mat Bowling was where it all began for Heyford Bowls Club. Back in 1991 a group of people who recognised an opportunity for starting a bowls club in Nether Heyford with the village hall being the perfect location. As an indoor game only, it is played over a much shorter length than the outdoor flat green game. It was much easier to start Heyford Bowls Club in this way, with the village hall being the prefect location. The basic skills required for playing the short mat game are exactly as those of the outdoor flat green game. But of course, weather is never a problem.
Heyford Short Mat bowling is played in the Village Hall with regular informal “roll-up” sessions on Wednesday afternoons, starting at 2pm and Wednesday evenings, starting 7pm, throughout the year. It is a great sport for all abilities and is an ideal introduction to bowling for complete beginners. There is always plenty of opportunity for you to chat to current members and get help and instruction on the techniques. What could be better than trying something local to you and where you will meet fellow villagers.
The club have spare bowls available for you to try, to enable you to find out if this is a possible sport for you. We only ask that you come with a pair of clean flat soled shoes (or play in your socks), in order to protect our bowling mats. We make a small charge of £2.50 per session. This includes tea/coffee in the break. If you take to the sport, there is an annual membership fee. See our Membership page for all current up-to-date membership types, details, and costs. You’ll see what tremendous value Heyford Short Mat Bowling is.
